Answer :
Whenever you eat a high carbohydrate meal some schools of thought explain that as the body tries to breakdown & absorb this large carbohydrate meal it ends up releasing sleep hormones in the brain.
Also when you eat a large carbohydrate meal, your body requires a large quantity of insulin to absorb it. Large insulin release is associated with symptoms such as fatigue & drowsiness.
So you will experience this phenomenon when you eat a large carbohydrate portion or a meal with less fiber.
Most people report of drowsiness after eating:
*Hausa Koko(a low fiber millet based porridge )
*Large ball of banku (cooked fermented corn & cassava dough)
travel to eat
*Large ball of fufu (pounded cassava) .
*Large quantity of waakye (rice & cowpeas, cooked) with spaghetti, gari (roasted cassava flakes) .
So the next time you wish to enjoy your meal without feeling sleepy afterwards.
*Reduce the quantity of the meal.
*Reserve a portion of the meal for another time.
*Add a high fiber portion to the meal. Eg Salad, whole wheat bread, mushrooms, local vegetables, beans etc.
*Share the meal with a friend to reduce the quantity you eat.
