Hi! I have been MIA for a while now (A Million apologies). I got an opportunity to join a group of friends (Dietitians) : Brittany Wilson, Terrie Jorgeson, Kena Ludeman to Tamale for a few charity outreaches! A very humbling experience. This was made possible by an incredible humanitarian, Prince Mahama, founder of Savannah Kids Education Project (SKEP) a project, founded with the aim to give underprivileged children in the
north of Ghana the possibility to follow primary and secondary education .
We met these adorable kids at the KPAWUMO CHILDRENS HOME. This is a small orphanage located in tamale, Northern region of Ghana. it servers as a home to more than 40 children mostly between the ages of 2 - 14years. It is managed by a caretaker, Mr Dawda, who serves as a father to these children.

Smart and amazing children who by no fault of theirs have been underprivileged in their early years of life. The caretakers and supporters of this home are doing a GREAT WORK funding and managing this intuition on their own but unfortunately there is more to be done.
It's interesting how our main struggles in the city are obesity and overindulgence but a few hours away from us people (kids) are struggling with lack of food (essential nutrients). Interesting world indeed. Though they are fed everyday, these kids are lacking some essential nutrients in their diet and as Dietitians we immediately detected these signs on their body. brittle hair, dry flaky skin, hair depigmentation these are all physical signs of malnutrition.
Hair depigmentation |
The yellow hair you see is not dyed or genetic, it's a physical sign of chronic malnutrition (protein & other nutrients).
Though we were not adequately prepared to carry out an intervention, as dietitians we did our best to educate the caregivers on basic nutrition, we also shared a healthy meal + fruits with them. it is our greatest to do more for these kids.

In the nearest future we plan to establish a garden to grow nutrient rich crops for their meals (practical and sustainable solutions).
With Crops such as beans, groundnut, carrot, watermelon, mango's just to mention we are assured these kids will be getting fortified meals on a daily basis.
With this I wish to appeal to who ever is currently reading this post to remember these children and make an effort to support this endeavor.
Support in whichever form will be greatly appreciated:
- Seedlings
- Gardening tools
- Intellectual advice
- Books
- Toys
- Clothing
- Shoes
- Prayers
